Composting Experiment
By Ian Shanahan, with assistance from Friends of the Earth Canada
As an increasing number of microplastics accumulate all around our planet, more and more people are becoming aware of the extent and implications of this subtle but highly impactful form of pollution. By virtue of their small size, microplastics are often out of sight and out of mind, making it especially challenging to get people to pay attention to them. The key for environmental educators and communicators is finding a relatable example of microplastic pollution — something from people’s everyday lives. While there are many examples, one that stands out is the use of Plastic Look-up (PLU) stickers on produce. The following inquiry-based activity allows learners to develop a nuanced understanding of the soil decomposition rates and habits of PLU stickers and organic materials.
