Concept: Exotic pest plants are invasive; they grow rapidly, spread rampantly, and reproduce prodigiously.

Grades: 4-12

Subjects: life science, math, social studies, physical education

Skills: application, comparing similarities and differences, description, discussion, generalization, kinesthetic concept development, observation, psychomotor development

Duration: 30 minutes

Group size: 25 or more

Setting: outdoor area with boundaries or large indoor area

Key vocabulary: invasive exotic pest plant, habitat, niche, population, competition, ecosystem

 

Objectives

Students will:

  • define and describe an invasive exotic plant
  • describe the characteristics of invasive exotic plants that make them successful
  • describe the effect of an invasive exotic plant infestation on an ecosystem.
