    Hi Michel,
We miss you at the Waldorf School of Baltimore, but your program is going strong. Thanks for this wonderful article. I particularly like your description of the benefits of letting children takes risks. You paint a picture of how important it is for children to take risks and discover that they can manage a bit of adversity; they are laying the foundation of confidence they’ll need to forge a path out into the world when they get older. Great stuff, Green Man!

  20. Thanks for the good work you do, Melissa. It’s important for us all to keep in mind the research that shows childhood connections to nature are more motivating than learning about the environment in class, in terms of leading to environmentally-aware behaviors as adults. Activities that spark curiosity or inspire awe and wonder are so powerful!

I find that laying blame for eco-injustices never gets me very far in my classroom. I choose to examine the design of the system that led to an environmental problem. In our classroom we come to the conclusion that people are not bad, but the design and the goals of the design need to change. This excites my students as we examine sustainable ways of creating products we all use. I suggest reading Cradle to Cradle and Upcycle to help move your classroom conversations further along these new design models.

This common-sense and virtually cost-free concept was adopted by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) since, according to Clem Laferriere, “there was a benefit to do so and it was an easy fix that didn’t come with a high price tag” (Ontario School Plant Manager, 2015). This strategy can also be applied to a school’s diesel bus emissions exposure reduction strategy by ensuring that high-volume air exchanges do not occur during busy bus loading/unloading times.

  52. I am a huge fan of bias in education — bias towards life, survival, ecology, living well, biophilia, respect for all living organisms and ecosystems, connecting and bonding with the rest of Nature, nature play for children, and the understanding that social equity trumps economic prosperity, but that both are trumped by the need for a healthy environment.

I also believe that this bias should be explicit in what we do, what we say, and what we teach as educators, and that we should consciously choose it and discuss it as colleagues and as a “system,” rather than passively accepting the “invisible” bias (a social charter, if you will) in everything we do, which is that the economy is the most important thing in life, and that everything we do must be in service to money, profit and greed.

And in case you balk at the notion that we have an invisible bias in our system and that it is all about money, consider how long our species has known that we’re ruining our home — to the point where we’ve brought on the sixth mass extinction, which threatens even our own survival — and then calculate how many young people (indeed, how many generations of young people) have gone through our schools since then and gone on blindly, like automatons, to making the world a worse place for their own children.

I love your site. I ‘ve spent hours researching for a course I would like to teach at my high school. I am an Art teacher and a Graphic Designer but have always had an interest in sustainability and I have been trying to develop a course in sustainable art and design. Something simple using cardboard, paper, plastic, fabric and other materials which are regularly trashed and teaching students how to up cycle or create art from them.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. My school wants an example of this course at the high school level but i haven’t found one. The courses i see at the university level are more geared toward engineering and solar power.
